Darren has said that in his works he tries to explore different aspects of the human condition. He is fascinated by the nature of personality and individuality. He looks for and explores this in all his works - of strangers, people in disguise, clowns and even apes.
While Darren's work is characterized by drama, humour and study of relationships, it is the affection and humanity with which he captures and presents his subjects that gives his work such a personal feel and which pulls in and engages the viewer.
His work shows his strong feeling for light and shade. Simplified surfaces and exaggerated forms as well as the intensified highlights render masses dramatic or mysterious. Often sparse, but always deft, his use of colour is insightful and uplifting, giving his subjects a glow of individuality. These qualities, along with his bold graphic lines and directional impulses modeled with subtle nuanced gestures keep his work fresh and alive (exciting).
