Tom Lewis

Tom Lewis is a British artist whose work explores storytelling as a fundamental part of human experience. Through painting, he investigates the mechanics of meaning-making, drawing on archetypal narratives, myths, and personal iconography to create works that feel at once playful and profound.

His paintings often feature recurring figures, such as Megan—an enduring presence in his work—who embodies the state of perpetual becoming. Striving, questioning, and navigating a world both strange and familiar, she reflects Tom’s broader fascination with the tension between order and chaos, knowing and unknowing. His practice balances meticulous world-building with the spontaneity of creation, inviting viewers to engage with his work as both observers and participants in its unfolding narratives.

Tom’s background in philosophy and his early fascination with the limits of human consciousness continue to shape his approach to painting. His process often involves layering and reworking, a form of visual problem-solving that mirrors the act of storytelling itself. Elements of humor, surrealism, and abstraction emerge alongside figures that reference classical mythology, contemporary culture, and personal memory. His titles, rich with narrative suggestion, act as catalysts—prompting the viewer to complete the story in their own minds.

In recent years, Tom’s work has evolved to engage with the idea of contemporary sacred art—not in a religious sense, but in its exploration of ideal ways of being. His paintings function as spaces for contemplation, prompting questions about identity, morality, and the power of narrative in shaping human experience.

Born in Birmingham in 1979, Tom received his BA in Fine Art from Middlesex University. Tom has exhibited widely, staging successful solo and group exhibitions, and his work has been represented at major art fairs around the world. His paintings are held in private collections internationally.
